OXFORD, Miss. – Celebrated Canadian pianist Ian Hominick performs a
solo concert Sunday (Feb. 22) at the University of Mississippi.
Hominick, associate professor of music at UM, takes the stage at 3 p.m.
in Nutt Auditorium of the Music Building. The free, public event is
part of the university’s Faculty Recital Series.
His afternoon repertoire includes Sonata in F minor, Op. 13, No. 6 by
Muzio Clementi; “Wanderer” – Fantasy in C Major, D. 760 by Franz
Schubert; and “Sonatine” by Maurice Ravel, plus pieces by Benjamin
Godard and Sigismund Thalberg.
Hominick began studying piano in Nova Scotia, attending Mount Allison University, where he was a student of Jamie Syer and Patricia Elliot. He continued his studies in the U.S. under internationally acclaimed pianists Jerome Rose and Earl Wild, while earning a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1991.
An active soloist, accompanist, adjudicator and teacher, Hominick maintains a busy schedule of concerts and piano master classes across the U.S. and Canada, including solo recitals in Chicago, Cincinnati, Ottawa, Montreal, Milwaukee and New York. He has appeared as a soloist on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, Chicago-Chautauqua Series and American Landmark Festivals, and he has been a featured guest for Saskatchewan’s Rites of Spring Festival, the Hornby Festival Society in British Columbia and the American Liszt Society Festival.
He recently completed his first tour in Italy. His performances have been broadcast both regionally and nationally on CBC Radio, Radio-Canada and National Public Radio in the U.S. He is a frequent guest on Chicago’s WFMT Radio program “Live from Studio One.”
Hominick’s premiere solo recording of the works of the legendary romantic pianist Sigismund Thalberg was released by Titanic Records in 1995 to glowing reviews from critics and a nomination for “Best Classical Recording” in the East Coast Music Awards. His second CD, featuring works by several rarely-heard classical and romantic composers, is in production and slated for release later this year.
Hominick joined the UM piano faculty in 1999. Besides his teaching, he directs the Piano Discoveries Summer Camp.
