Listen to the Faculty Woodwind Quintet.
OXFORD, Miss. – The Faculty Woodwind Quintet at the University of Mississippi is slated to perform a spring concert Tuesday, March 24.
The 8 p.m. program in the Music Building’s Nutt Auditorium is free and open to the public.
The quintet features music faculty Wade Irvin on the bassoon, Linda Pereksta on flute, Michael Rowlett on clarinet, Katherine Hopkins Piecuch on oboe and Bob Gilbert on the French horn. The ensemble formed in 1991.
Rowlett said the concert will include “a wide variety of works for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn.”
The first half of the program features a four-movement work that Rowlett compares to a symphony for woodwind quintet. “It is a serious piece that features a wide variety of moods and textures, from energetic and passionate to lyrical and sweet,” Rowlett said.
The second half of the program features three shorter, lighter works for woodwinds, including works by two contemporary American composers, Jack Gallagher and Dana Wilson. Gallagher visited Ole Miss last fall for a performance of his works commissioned by music department faculty John Schuesselin and Nancy Balach.
“We are excited to perform another of his works, which is a charming set of variations on a flowing melody,” Rowlett said.
