Former Rebel Basketball Great Joins UM Development Team

OXFORD, Miss. – Former Rebel basketball standout Keith Carter has joined the University of Mississippi as associate director of development for the School of Business Administration.

“I always knew I wanted to come back to live in Oxford, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to work for the School of Business,” said Carter, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UM in 2001.

Since graduating, Carter has spent much of his time on basketball courts overseas, playing professionally in the Italian Basketball League for seven seasons. During his four seasons as a Rebel, Carter earned first-team all-SEC honors in 1999 and picked up a gold medal for the United States at the 1998 Goodwill Games.

In 2008, Carter left basketball and moved back to Mississippi to join Barnes-Pettey Financial Advisors in Clarksdale. There, he drew on his UM education to develop and execute financial plans for individuals.

“We’re extremely encouraged to have someone of Keith’s caliber working to make sure the School of Business Administration continues to offer outstanding academic programs, competitive scholarship packages and support for our faculty,” said Ken Cyree, business school dean.

Deborah Vaughn, assistant vice chancellor for university relations and executive director of university development, agreed: “Keith brings enormous talent to our development team, and we know he will be incredibly successful in his new role.”

In that new role, Carter will raise funds to ensure business administration students and faculty have the resources they need to excel.

“There’s a definite need within the business school, and a lot of opportunity to grow support for the school,” Carter said. “Dean Cyree is doing a great job of leading the charge, and I’m thrilled to assist him.”

Carter is joined in Oxford by his wife, Jill, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accountancy from UM, and their two children, Drew, 4, and Callie, 2.
