Southern Foodways Alliance Gains Global Distinction

OXFORD, Miss. – International travel magazine Travel and Leisure has
recognized the Southern Foodways Alliance, an institute of the
University of Mississippi, as one of 16 global organizations making
outstanding efforts in cultural and resource preservation.

The publication selected the SFA – housed in the Center for the Study
of Southern Culture – for a 2009 Travel and Leisure Global Vision Award
because of its efforts to preserve culinary heritage.

“An exuberant champion of Southern food culture – from its barbecue pit
masters and bourbon distilleries to its butterscotch-pie breakfasts and
deviled-egg competitions – the Southern Foodways Alliance celebrates
and records the regions’ diverse gastronomic landscape through
documentary films, books and not-for the-calorie-shy field trips and
events,” the magazine reported.
