OXFORD, Miss. – U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a former
Vietnam POW and candidate for the 2000 Republican
presidential nomination, visits the University of
Mississippi Nov. 18 for a public forum.
Sponsored by the Trent Lott Leadership Institute
Lecture Series, McCain’s 3 p.m. address takes place
in the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. He is
expected to discuss current affairs, followed by a
question-and-answer session. The presentation and a
following reception are free and open to the
public.
“Sen. McCain brings a diverse perspective to
national issues,” said William Gottshall, executive
director of the Lott Institute. “He’s a man of
independent thinking, and he creates thought
provoking solutions to current issues.”
After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in
1958, McCain began his career as a naval aviator.
In 1982, he was elected to Congress, representing
what was then the first congressional district of
Arizona. In 1986, he was elected to the United
States Senate to take the seat held by Barry
Goldwater.
McCain ran unsuccessfully for the Republican
presidential nomination in 2000. The senior senator
from Arizona, he chairs the Senate Committee on
Indian Affairs and serves on the Armed Services,
Commerce, Science and Transportation committees.
“We’re excited to bring a national figure to the
Ole Miss campus,” said Chancellor Robert Khayat.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to
be able to have dialogue with such an inspirational
leader.”
While at UM, McCain also plans to meet with the new
Lott Leadership Scholars and with students in the
Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College.
