Legal Specialist in Sexual Misconduct, Campus Security to Give Public Address

OXFORD, Miss. – Brett Sokolow, a higher education attorney
who specializes in sexual misconduct and campus security,
visits the University of Mississippi Tuesday (Sept. 11) to
deliver a public address and interact with students about
the risks involving alcohol and sex.

Sokolow, editor of the Report on Campus Safety and Student
Development and president of the National Center for Higher
Education Risk Management, speaks on “Drunk Sex’ or Date
Rape: Do You Know the Difference?” at 7 p.m. in the Ford
Center for the Performing Arts. The presentation is free
and open to the public.

The author of 10 books on campus security, sexual
misconduct and campus judicial affairs, Sokolow draws on
his legal experience to facilitate this interactive jury
exercise in which his audience “hears” a trial based on a
real sexual assault case. He has presented the program at
more than a thousand colleges and high schools.

“Today’s campus culture can be confusing to students
because of conflicting messages and common myths about
alcohol and sex,” said Mary Carruth, director of the Sarah
Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies. “Brett Sokolow –
without preaching – helps students uncover these myths in
an engaging way so that by the hour’s end, they understand
relevant laws and methods of clear communication.”

At noon in the Ole Miss Student Union ballroom, Solokow
plans to meet with invited students on “10 Things Every
Student Should Know About Drinking.” The hourlong
interactive program is touted to help “reinforce harm
reduction emphasis, underline key enforcement initiatives,
encourage the use of protective behaviors, empower
bystander intervention and discourage the enabling of
high-risk consumption (of alcohol).”

Sokolow also has scheduled a session with University
Counseling Center staff and a two-hour training event for
student residence hall advisers and other key campus
personnel.

Co-sponsoring Sokolow’s visit to UM are the Isom Center,
Office of the Dean of Students, Department of Campus
Programming, Office of Greek Life, Athletics, Office of
Health Promotion, Student Housing and Residence Life,
University Counseling Center and the Associated Student
Body.
