Kennon Observatory Open House Offers Look at Moon, Planets and Stars

09/19/2007

OXFORD, Miss. – A close-up look at the planets and beyond
is available to amateur stargazers and other interested
public Friday night (Sept. 21) during an open house at the
University of Mississippi’s Kennon Observatory.

The viewing, set for 7:30-10 p.m., is to look at the moon,
Jupiter and beyond using several of the university’s
telescopes, except the one that is under repair in the
large dome. The event is free, and families with children
are especially welcome.

Tibor Torma, director of the observatory and assistant
professor of physics and astronomy, encourages people to
come to the event, which is held six or seven times a
year.

“Jupiter will not be visible until late evening, but there
should still be plenty for people to enjoy viewing,” Torma
said.

The observation is possible only if weather permits. If the
sky is cloudy, faculty members from the Department of
Astronomy and Physics are to present physics demonstrations
in the Lewis Hall astronomy laboratory.
