Artist Series Kicks off Season with Chamber Ensemble, Oct. 9

OXFORD, Miss. – Described as “nothing short of stunning” by
Gramophone magazine, the Academy of St. Martin in the
Fields Chamber Ensemble makes its first visit to the
Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday
(Oct. 9). Norm Easterbrook, center director, said the
ensemble’s performance is sure to please the most
discerning of classical music aficionados.

Part of the 70-year-old Artist Series at the University of
Mississippi, the concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27,
$24 and $12 for various seating and available at the UM Box
Office in the Ole Miss Student Union or by calling
662-915-7411.

Formed in 1959 by 11 enthusiastic musicians as the Academy
of St. Martin in the Fields, the group’s first three
recordings led to its quickly becoming one of the most
recorded chamber ensembles in history. In 1967, the group
was renamed the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber
Ensemble to reflect its expanded repertoire and desire to
perform larger chamber works.

The Artist Series continues at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, with
the UM Concert Singers and choirs from Rust College and
Delta State University, plus the full Mississippi Symphony
Orchestra performing a tribute to American composer William
Grant Still.
