OXFORD, Miss. – Families can learn how to preserve
cherished keepsakes – from photographs and paper documents
to sound recordings and home movies – in a free, public
workshop Friday (Oct. 5) at the University of Mississippi.
Held to celebrate Archives Month, “Preserving Your Family
Memories” is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. in the J.D.
Williams Library’s Department of Archives and Special
Collections, located on the third floor.
Participants are encouraged to bring materials for the
archivists to evaluate. Feel free to bring a brown bag
lunch, as well, said Greg Johnson, blues curator and
assistant professor.
“Every year, more and more family photo albums, home
movies, and scrapbooks are lost due to improper storage
conditions,” Johnson said. “Rampant mold growth, vinegar
syndrome and other damaging conditions can be avoided by
taking several easy steps in caring for our family
memories. Come find out how.”
Members of the department plan to speak briefly about
preservation issues, then answer questions from the
audience.
Co-sponsoring the workshop with the library are the Society
of Mississippi Archivists and the Department of Archives
and History.
