Center for Writing and Rhetoric Opens Faculty Grant Program

All full-time faculty members invited to apply for two types of seed grants to boost writing instruction

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi’s Center for Writing and Rhetoric is launching a new effort to improve writing instruction across campus, a series of faculty grants to be awarded in the spring. The Faculty Seed Grants are the final phase of the Quality Enhancement Plan, which began in 2009.

Applications for Faculty Seed Grants are available starting today (Nov. 1), providing funding in two categories: Level I research grants of $1,500 will be awarded for faculty to travel to conferences or receive research support related to improving the teaching of writing. Level II teaching grants of $5,000 will be available for faculty who design writing-intensive modifications to existing courses and implement them during the following academic year.

Faculty members who get Level II teaching grants must meet in a seminar format with Angela Green, the writing enriched curriculum core instructor at the Center for Writing and Rhetoric, to plan such courses and improve writing instruction.

Both types of grants will be selected on a competitive basis, requiring the endorsement of the faculty members’ department chairs. Grants are open to all full-time faculty members.
