Fun Fact: UM Owns Over 40 Patents

I was goofing off on the Internet … er, I mean looking for a blog post item … Tuesday and I ran across this interesting factoid on the official University of Mississippi website.

“The university holds more than 40 patents for inventions including a fire ant trap, an algal herbicide, novel drug-delivery systems, a thermoacoustic refrigeration device, immune system stimulators and possible treatments for cancer, malaria, pain and infections. This work takes place across the university, which is home to more than 20 major research centers.”

My online snooping turned up more info on UM patent applications in the last few years on the website freshpatents.com.

If you’re too lazy to click the link to recent patent projects, they include a “stuttering inhibition method and device,” a secure wireless communications receiver, which has all sorts of potential uses, and also methods for treating withdrawal from addictive compounds, among others. There are several other much more technical and impressive sounding projects detailed there. Check it out.
