Business School Dean to Step Down Next Month

OXFORD, Miss. – Brian Reithel, dean of the University of
Mississippi School of Business Administration since 2003,
is stepping down in December to return to full-time
teaching and research.

“Travel, administrative responsibilities and the other
demands on my time have taken me away from my family and
teaching more than I would like,” Reithel said. “I asked
the provost and she graciously allowed me to return to the
classroom.”

Reithel joined the UM faculty in 1991 as an assistant
professor of management and marketing. Since then, he has
served as associate vice chancellor for university
relations, co-chair of the university’s sesquicentennial
celebration, interim director of the Lott Leadership
Institute and chair of the management information systems
department, while being promoted to associate and then full
professor.

“Dean Reithel’s contributions and service to the university
have been valuable,” said Provost and Vice Chancellor for
Academic Affairs Carolyn Staton. “He has earned the
opportunity to do what he loves best – interacting daily
with students.”

Reithel earned a bachelor’s degree in business
administration from Eastern New Mexico University and an
MBA and Ph.D. from Texas Tech University. His teaching
honors at UM include the School of Business Outstanding
Teacher Award, MBA Teacher of the Year Award and School of
Business Favorite Teacher Award.
