Internships are an important part of a college education. Summer internships offer students hands-on experiences in their field of choice.

University of Mississippi senior Anna Lee Whisenant, a Madison native, has spent her summer in Washington, D.C., as a policy intern for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The public policy and political science major is working in the SBA’s Office of Financial Assistance to rewrite policy to better suit the needs of small businesses. Whisenant said her studies at Ole Miss have given her the knowledge to become an asset to the SBA in this internship.

“I’ve definitely been preparing for this with my courses in public policy,” she said. “And I’m doing a good job here because of my education at Ole Miss.”

Because of the success of this internship, Whisenant has decided to pursue a career in law in hopes of working as general counsel for a federal agency such as the SBA.
