OXFORD, Miss. – Authentic Thai cuisine is to be featured in
the second civic dinner hosted by the Cook! Eat! Share!
organization at the University of Mississippi at 6 p.m.
Wednesday (March 5).
Scheduled in Lenoir Hall, the dinner offers a three-course
meal, including selections of appetizers, main courses and
desserts. Main courses include Tom Yum Kung, a hot and sour
soup with shrimp and chicken; and Panaeng Gai, a spicy
chicken curry dish served with Jasmine rice.
Cost of the dinner is $14 and reservation requests should
be e-mailed to Daphne Ingene at ceshare@olemiss.edu by
March 3.
Ingene, a native of Hong Kong and graduate student in
counseling education, is the dinner coordinator. The Cook!
Eat! Share! organization was created in fall 2007 by UM’s
Counseling Center, Office of International Programs and
Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. The
multicultural organization includes students and faculty
spouses representing countries of Western Europe, Asia and
South America, as well as the United States.
Ingene said the event uses food as a means to explain
different cultures, traditions and customs. Participants
will be exposed to Thai music, traditional clothing and
discussions on culture.
“For instance, Thai food uses a lot of spices, and the
reason is that the country is located so close to the
equator where it is very hot,” she said. “So, they need
strong seasoning to make food appetizing.”
She added that the overwhelmingly positive response to the
organization’s first event, which featured Chinese food and
cultural lessons, demonstrated an interest in additional
Cook! Eat! Share! events. The organization is planning
events featuring food from Brazil in April and Ecuador in
May.
