OXFORD, Miss. – The internationally renowned Empire Brass
concert band is scheduled to perform March 28 at the
University of Mississippi.

The 8 p.m. concert at the Ford Center for the Performing
Arts promises to be one of the best concerts of the year,
said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center director.

“Summing up the wonders of Empire Brass’ tone quality is a
challenge, but I will say the group’s virtuosity is
electrifying and their programming – ranging over five
centuries – is diverse, balanced and intense. This is a
concert not to miss,” he said.

Part of the university’s famed Artist Series, the concert
offers tickets priced at $27, $24 and $12 for various
seating. They are available by visiting the UM Box Office
in the Student Union, Ford Center Box Office or “events” at

They also can be ordered by calling 662-915-7411.

The Washington Post described Empire Brass’ recent Kennedy
Center concert as “one of the supreme concerts of the year.
The Empire Brass has pungent clarity, molten sustained
notes, zippy staccatos and show-stopping presto.”

The first brass ensemble to win the prestigious Naumberg
Chamber Music Award, Empire Brass is recognized for its
brilliant virtuosity and diversity of its repertoire, which
ranges from pieces by Bach and Handel to selections of jazz
and Broadway. The group performs more than 100 concerts
annually in cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago,
Washington, London, Zurich and Tokyo.

Each of the five musicians – Rolf Smedvig and Marc Reese,
trumpets; Michelle Perry, horn; Mark Hetzler, trombone; and
Kenneth Amis, tuba – has held leading positions with major
American orchestras.

The ensemble has been featured on CBS’s “Good Morning
America,” NBC’s “Today Show” and “Sunday Today,” and PBS’s
“Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,” as well as on commercial and
public radio networks nationwide.
