OXFORD, Miss. – Students in the University of Mississippi Department of Theatre Arts have scheduled a special matinee performance of “The Grapes of Wrath” Thursday (April 3) for invited students and retirees.
The matinee is at 10 a.m. in Fulton Chapel. This performance is free to residents of the Veteran’s Home in Oxford and other area retirement homes and assisted-care facilities, and $2 each for middle and high school students (no charge for the students’ chaperones and teachers). Call Catherine Mayhew at 662-915-5816 for ticket information and to ensure seating space.
“The special matinee for local schools and retirement and veteran’s homes is a form of outreach to the community,” said Rhona Justice Malloy, department chair. “My thinking has been that it builds partnerships with the community. Offering a discounted show – free in the case of seniors and veterans – encourages young people to become theatregoers and honors our veterans and senior citizens.”
Arrangements are being made for the retirees’ vehicles to unload close to Fulton Chapel. Student actors in costume will assist in helping the senior guests into the theatre and escorting them to their seats.
The production’s regular schedule includes 8 p.m. shows Wednesday through Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday. Tickets are $10.50 for adults, $8.50 for children and seniors, and $7 for Ole Miss students. Tickets are available by visiting the UM Box Office in the Student Union or online at
or by calling 662-915-7411.
