Business Career Panel to Provide Networking, Advice for Students

OXFORD, Miss. – Business students at the University of Mississippi can get ahead in the competitive job market April 10 when more than 30 senior business executives visit the Oxford campus.

The Business Advisory Board and Alumni Career Panel event, set for 3 p.m. in Johnson Commons Ballroom, features Ole Miss alumni who will provide the job-seeking students with opinions and guidance. Students have the opportunity to ask for practical advice on subjects ranging from the job search process to resumes to negotiating for compensation.

The event provides an excellent opportunity to bridge the academic world with the business world, said John Holleman, director of corporate relations and MBA services in the UM business school.

“I believe that by actively involving alumni as mentors in the lives of our students we’re able to help them become more comfortable, competent and successful in dealing with the wide range of situations they’ll face in their business careers,” Holleman said.

The BAB members, who share a love for Ole Miss, have expertise in particular fields of business and government. From entrepreneurs to CEOs to mayors, they have a wide range of skills and an extensive network of contacts that has been developed over successful careers.

“Students have the opportunity to meet with business leaders who have many years of experience and hundreds of contacts throughout the South and the nation,” said Bill Fry, BAB chairman. “Sharing this experience will help students focus their time and energy in job searches and in starting their careers on the right path.”

Many BAB members have hired UM business students for internships and permanent jobs or provided contacts that have led them to jobs. The Ole Miss business school Web site provides information about BAB and its members. Students can contact the members directly to seek their advice on their job searches and careers.
