Workshop in Effective Grant Writing Taught by Leading Consultant April 12, 19

OXFORD, Miss. – Limited funding is a challenge faced by
many individuals and organizations. The solution may be a
grant, but a well-written proposal is a necessary step in
landing such an award.

A detailed grant writing workshop is scheduled at the
University of Mississippi April 12 and 19 designed to teach
participants essential information and techniques for
writing each major component of a grant proposal.

Part of UM’s Communiversity program, the Effective Grant
Writing workshop spans consecutive Saturdays. The sessions,
which run 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Weir Hall, are led by Kenneth
Wheatley, who has consulted for several federal and state
agencies on grant writing and grant review. The workshop
fee is $300.

Wheatley has reviewed more than 1,000 grant applications as
a member of federal, state and foundation grant review
panels. A Certified Grant Specialist through Research
Associates and the National Grant Writers Association, he
has presented numerous grant writing workshops at various
statewide conferences and in small group settings. In
February 2005, Wheatley founded Project Solutions Inc., a
grants development, training and project management company
to assist faith- and community-based organizations in
increasing their capacity to win and manage grants.

“Workshop discussion focuses on each of the five major
grant components: problem statement, goals and objectives,
implementation plan, budget and evaluation,” Wheatley
said.

Through hands-on exercises and group discussion,
participants learn how to vary data presentation, write
measurable goals and objectives, and prepare effective
budget summaries and budget narratives.

“Participants are given insights into what most funders
look for in a fundable project and how a typical grant
review is conducted,” he said.

Effective Grant Writing is intended for both novice and
experienced grant writers who seek to improve their grant
writing skills and success rate.
