OXFORD, Miss. – If laughter is the best medicine, then be
prepared to laugh yourself healthy at the University of
Mississippi Opera Theatre’s performances of “Too Many
Sopranos” and “La Perichole” this weekend in Meek Hall
Auditorium.

The comic operas run Friday through Sunday (April 11-13).
Showtimes are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m.
Sunday. Tickets are $12.50 for adults, $10 for seniors and
children, and $8 for UM students with valid ID. They are
available by calling the UM Box Office at 662-915-7411.

“Both are wonderful spoofs,” said Julia Aubrey, Opera
Theatre director. “I do have an interesting side note on
‘Too Many Sopranos’: it was written by my mentor, Edwin
Penhorwood, who dedicated it to his wife, Costanza Cuccaro,
my former voice teacher.”

In “Too Many Sopranos,” four divas die and go to heaven,
only to discover they won’t be allowed to sing in the choir
until they rescue some tenors and basses from hell to keep
the heavenly choir balanced.

“La Perichole” is the story of two struggling musicians
very much in love who must choose between food and true
love.
