OXFORD, Miss. – Community college transfer students can
benefit from a new scholarship at the University of
Mississippi starting this fall.
The Community College Academic Excellence Scholarship
offers $500 per academic year for community college
transfers with a minimum of 48 transfer hours and at least
a 3.5 cumulative GPA. It is renewable for one additional
year if the student maintains at least a 3.0 GPA on a
minimum of 12 hours per semester.
Max Miller, associate director of admissions, said the
scholarship is an important recruiting tool for transfer
students.
“This is a way to reward community college transfer
students who have done well and have not applied for Phi
Theta Kappa (the international honor society for two-year
colleges),” Miller said.
To date, 109 Community College Academic Excellence
Scholarships have been awarded for 2008-09. One went to Ann
Katelyn McClellan of Leland, a pre-pharmacy major at
Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead who will
transfer to UM this fall.
“The scholarship is going to help pay for my tuition when I
attend Ole Miss,” McClellan said.
Transfer students wanting to apply for the scholarship
should submit their UM admission application with an
official copy of their community college transcript. Once
they are admitted, admissions officials review the
applications and transcripts and automatically award the
scholarship to those who qualify.
