Children from Willie Price Nursery School were Santa’s little helpers as they donated toys to the annual Books & Bears program at the University of Mississippi. The Black Faculty and Staff Organization will distribute the items to UM physical plant employees and friends later this week. UM photo by Nathan Latil.

Such is the mind-set of the children at the Willie Price Nursery School at the University of Mississippi. When the youngsters learned about the Black Faculty and Staff Organization’s annual Books & Bears drive, they decided to collect and donate toys for the program. The group delivered 20 items to the Lyceum Tuesday morning.

“I am so proud of the children of Willie Price,” said Carolyn Allen, kindergarten teacher at the school. “They held a bake sale to raise money to buy toys for other boys and girls. I am so glad that we were once again able to support the efforts of the BFSO and to give back to members of the university community.”

The children’s donation was noticed and very much appreciated by BFSO officials.

“It is just amazing! The thoughtfulness of these children towards others captures the spirit of the holidays,” said Donald Cole, associate provost and assistant to the chancellor for multi-cultural affairs. “We can certify their gifts as ‘child-desired’ since they were hand-picked by the experts!”

Cole said Gamma Beta Phi service fraternity contributed a significant number of items for the program. In addition to the usual dolls, books and games, a number of new bicycles and tricycles were given by an anonymous donor, he added.

This is the 11th year that new teddy bears, children’s books and toys have been collected for children of custodial and grounds workers. Distribution is scheduled Dec. 19 in the Student Union Ballroom.
