Stanford Financial Group to Sponsor Annual Business School Banking and Finance Symposium

OXFORD – Stanford Financial Group, a global network of financial
services companies, is the title sponsor of the University of
Mississippi School of Business Administration’s annual Banking and
Finance Symposium scheduled Nov. 7.

Stanford’s involvement allows the symposium to offer continuing
education units for attending professionals for the first time, as well
as expand the program.

Speakers include Laura Pendergest, Stanford Financial Group’s chief
investment officer, and Jaret Seiberg, banking and finance analyst for
Stanford Policy Research Group, a division of Stanford Group Company.

“Stanford operates private wealth management offices in Jackson, Columbus and Tupelo, so we are very familiar with the University of Mississippi Banking and Finance Symposium,” said Doug McDaniel, Stanford Group managing director. “The high regard in which the symposium is held and the opportunity to expand its offerings inspired us to lend our support as title sponsor. We look forward to what will certainly be a dynamic symposium. The fact that it is being held post-election will make it all the more interesting for those attending.”

McDaniel oversees Stanford’s Private Client Group offices in Mississippi and serves on the UM business school’s banking and finance board.

Ken Cyree, business school interim dean, said that while the symposium has had financial supporters in the past, Stanford’s level of involvement is a first for the event. He expects about 200 to 300 students, alumni and professionals to attend the symposium and expects the available continuing education credit will help promote the event.

“Offering the CEUs provides a service to the profession and all these different groups that may attend,” Cyree said. “We felt that would allow a broader reach out to the community, so that people could not only attend and learn something new but would be getting credit for it to help fulfill requirements to remain certified in their profession. We will also have Drs. Bonnie and Robert Van Ness from our faculty speak on the current market situation, and they bring a tremendous amount of expertise to these tumultuous times. “

The Van Nesses are both associate professors of finance at UM and are widely published in stock market trading and liquidity, Cyree said.

Pendergest, a specialist in technical and fundamental analysis of global investment markets, will discuss “The Market Today, The Market Tomorrow” during the symposium.

Seiberg, who worked as Washington Bureau chief and assistant managing editor of The Deal and The Daily Deal before joining Stanford, provides research services addressing financial services policy and asbestos reform.

“We are delighted to be the presenting sponsor for the banking and finance symposium,” said Mississippi native James Davis, Stanford financial director and chief financial officer. “We believe those attending will find significant value in the insights shared by Laura and Jaret.”

Stanford Financial is a network of independently owned financial service companies with more than $50 billion in assets under management or advisement, according to the organization’s Web site. It provides investors with “expertise in asset allocation strategies, investment advisory services, award-winning policy and equity research, international private banking and trust administration, commercial banking, investment banking, merchant banking, institutional sales and trading, real estate investment and insurance.” With more than 95 affiliated businesses in North America, South America, the Caribbean and Europe, Stanford employs about 3,000 people.
