OXFORD, Miss. – Decorated Army Chaplain Jeff Struecker, who
participated in the Army mission to Somalia that was the
inspiration for the book and film “Black Hawk Down,” is
scheduled to visit the University of Mississippi and Oxford
Sunday (Sept. 23) to discuss ways to handle fear.
Struecker, who received the Master of Divinity degree from
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky, is
slated to be a guest speaker at First Baptist Church for
services at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m.
Following, he is to attend a wild game luncheon for UM
students at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house on the Ole
Miss campus.
Major Andy Field, assistant professor of military science
and faculty sponsor for Valor, said the luncheon menu will
offer a variety of wild game, including deer, goose, dove
and alligator.
“There will also be drawings for several prizes, including
a muzzleloader, bow and shotgun,” Field said.
Struecker, who has participated in every U.S. military
initiative since Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989, is
the author of the book “The Road to Unafraid” (Thomas
Nelson, 2006), which tells of his experiences on the
frontlines of combat and how he overcame fear through the
help of God. It is available in bookstores, including
Promises and Praise bookstore and Square Books in Oxford.
Struecker has received several medals and honors for his
actions during these battles, including the Bronze Star
with “V” Device for Valor, Southwest Asia Service Medal,
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal
and the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal.
Struecker’s visit is made possible by Campus Crusade for
Christ, First Baptist Church and Valor, a division of
Campus Crusade and Military Ministry for ROTC members.
