Journalism Students and Faculty Produce New Magazine, MZINE

OXFORD, Miss. – During October, the University of
Mississippi’s Department of Journalism introduced a new
regular publication, MZINE, a full-color, 20-page magazine
showcasing student work.

Samir Husni, journalism chair, is the magazine’s publisher.
Garreth Blackwell, journalism instructor, serves as art
director and Robin Street, instructor in journalism and
public relations, oversees the editorial side of the
publication.

Husni said the magazine completes the missing piece of Ole
Miss’ student media operation. Plans call for it to become
a weekly publication in connection with a new course in
magazine publishing.

“This magazine is yet another effort to complete the circle
of media that we have at Ole Miss,” Husni said. “We have a
daily newspaper, an online operation, a TV station, a radio
station and a quarterly magazine. The only missing thing
from the circle of media is a weekly. I hope that what
we’ve done now with MZINE is just the first baby step
toward a weekly publication that will make our circle
complete.”

The third issue of MZINE is to be available Nov. 9. It
focuses on Putlizer Prize-winning author Thomas L.
Friedman, who recently visited the Oxford campus and
delivered the Honors College 10th anniversary address. The
magazines can be picked up in Farley Hall and the Ole Miss
Student Union.

Street said MZINE is significant because it gives students
another type of media for showcasing their work.

“Our class does not just teach the theory of magazine
production; there’s no theory involved,” Street said.
“Instead, the students actually produce the magazine.”

MZINE covers topics such as people, entertainment, trends,
culture, lifestyle and the arts. The first issue
highlighted volunteerism in the Lafayette, Oxford and
University communities, the second issue covered food.
