Ole Miss African Dance-Drum Ensemble to Perform Spring Concert April 14

OXFORD, Miss. – An evening of Tokoe, Gahu, Borborbor and new Ghanaian dances and music is offered Tuesday (April 14) at the University of Mississippi when the Ole Miss African Drum-Dance Ensemble presents its spring concert.

Elikem Samuel Kwame Nyamuame, artistic director of the African Music Ensemble at the University of Florida (Gainesville), is guest artist for the 8 p.m. concert in the Music Building’s Nutt Auditorium. The program is sponsored by UM’s departments of Music and Campus Programming and Office of Multicultural Affairs, as well as the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and Yocona International Folk Music Festival.

George Worlasi Kwasi Dor, UM associate professor of music and OMADDE director, said he is pleased with the concert.

“The concert is called ‘Creativity and Communality,’ and it’s an opportunity for us to showcase new drums, new costumes and some new dances,” he said.

OMADDE formed in 2003, with the purchase of 15 drums, hand-carved from tweneboa, a Ghanaian cedar tree.

Concert tickets are $5 and available by calling the UM Box Office at 662-915-7511 or by visiting the Box Office in the Ole Miss Student Union from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
