OXFORD, Miss. – The Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony Orchestra presents its opening concert for the 2008-09 season Monday (Oct. 27) at the University of Mississippi.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
Performing Arts are $10 for general admission and $6 for students with
ID. Tickets are available by calling the UM Box Office at 662-915-7411
or by visiting the Box Office in the Ole Miss Student Union from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
The evening program opens with Carl Maria von Weber’s “Oberon” and
concludes with three of Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. Other
pieces slated for the concert include Mozart’s Divertimento in D major
and Gabriel Faure’s “Elegie” for solo violoncello and orchestra,
featuring guest cellist Susan Gaston.
“‘Elegie’ is such melancholic work with rich tones,” Gaston said. “Most
often, the piece is perfomed with a pianist, so I’m lucky and excited
to get to play with an orchestra.”
Gaston, a native of Charlottesville, Va., has served on the music
faculty since 1997 as adjunct instructor of violoncello and string bass
and as cellist with the Oxford Piano Trio. She has degrees from Duke
University and the University of Arizona, where she studied with Gordon
Epperson. Before moving to Oxford, Gaston was a faculty member at
McNeese State University, where she taught cello, string bass, music
history and music appreciation.
