OXFORD, Miss. – Steve Preston, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, is scheduled to speak Tuesday (April 1) at the University of Mississippi.
Preston plans to deliver the free, public address “Current State of the Economy and Free Trade” at 9:30 a.m. in Bryant Hall, Room 209. Presented as a town hall meeting, the program is hosted by UM’s School of Business Administration and the Mississippi Small Business Development Center, headquartered on the Oxford campus.
“The fact that the SBA administrator is taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the university and the MSBDC state office is unprecedented and speaks volumes as to the unparalleled effectiveness of our working relationship,” said Walter “Doug” Gurley, MSBDC director. “The Small Business Administration is a primary funding partner for the MSBDC program, which is hosted by the University of Mississippi.”
Preston was appointed by President George W. Bush and sworn in as the 22nd administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration in 2006. His focus has been enhancing the SBA’s disaster relief efforts, especially on the Gulf Coast. Under Preston, the SBA has disbursed $6.9 billion to victims to rebuild their homes and businesses.
“The excellent working relationship between the SBA District Office (in Jackson), directed by Janita Stewart; the University of Mississippi, under the leadership of Chancellor Khayat; and the MSBDC is what enabled us to respond so effectively to the Hurricane Katrina Crisis,” Gurley said.
