Pharmacy Administration Recognizes Industry Pioneer as Alumnus of the Year

OXFORD, Miss. – Martin Jernigan, senior director of
business development and new product commercialization at
Novo Nordisk in Princeton, N.J., has been recognized as the
Alumnus of the Year by the University of Mississippi
Department of Pharmacy Administration.

Martin was honored during School of Pharmacy Alumni Weekend
Feb. 8-9. He received his master’s degree in 1989 and
doctorate in 1991, both from UM. His bachelor’s degree is
from Auburn University. Selection is based on contributions
to pharmacy or the pharmaceutical industry.

“Martin has significantly influenced the pharmaceutical
industry as one of the pioneers for incorporating marketing
research into the early stages of new product development,”
said Dewey D. Garner, interim chair of pharmacy
administration. “He refined his vision for pharmacy
practice as a graduate student at Ole Miss while acquiring
the research skills necessary to impact the profession of
pharmacy.”

At Novo Nordisk, Jernigan is responsible for leading the
identification, development, negotiation and implementation
of breakthrough business development opportunities that
enable the firm to become the U.S. leader in diabetes care
and biopharmaceuticals. He collaborates with brand
leadership teams to ensure alignment and to ensure that
actions are taken to achieve short- and long-term
profitability goals, including pipeline products. He also
oversees the five-year strategic planning process of the
U.S. commercial operation unit.

Before joining Nova Nordisk in 2006, Jernigan was executive
director for new business development with Ortho Biotech.
He was responsible for identifying, evaluating and
executing business development strategies and delivering
business deals. From 1991 to 2004, he worked at Aventis
Pharmaceuticals as a senior director, deputy head of new
products commercialization for global marketing and
medical. He was a research associate from 1990 to ’92 in
the Pharmaceutical Marketing Research Program in UM’s
Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
