Journalism Students, Instructor Make Good Showing in Statewide Competition

OXFORD, Miss. – Four University of Mississippi journalism students and their instructor, along with an Oxford professional, won awards in the Public Relations Association of Mississippi statewide competition.

The awards were presented April 17 at a luncheon in Jackson.

“I was so proud of my students,” said Robin Street, journalism instructor. “They were judged on the same level as PR professionals, and they were the only students in the state to win in the competition.”

Whitney Tarpy, a senior journalism major from Lebanon, Tenn., won the PRAM $1,000 scholarship. Students Susan Powell and Lindsay Presley, along with former student Kat Bosio, won awards for work they had completed for class. Presley, a senior marketing communications major from Olive Branch won a Certificate of Achievement for feature writing. Powell, a senior marketing communications major from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., won a Certificate of Achievement for her public relations program. Bosio, of Pascagoula, who graduated in August, won an Award of Excellence for her public service program.

Street won an award of excellence for internal publications and two awards of achievement for feature writing.

Pam Swain, vice president of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, won an Award of Excellence for Publications-External Magazine and a Certificate of Achievement in Potpourri or Home Town Spirit Art.
