Industry Leaders Headline Annual Insurance Symposium March 25-26

OXFORD, Miss. – The 14th annual Insurance Symposium March 25-26 at the University of Mississippi features an impressive list of speakers, including CEOs of five major companies.

“Meeting the Challenges in Dynamic Markets,” hosted by the School of Business Administration’s Risk Management and Insurance program, is expected to draw more than 200 professionals.

“The objective (of the symposium) is to bring in national and regional leaders in the risk management and insurance fields to address alumni, friends and students about the latest developments in the marketplace,” said Larry Cox, professor of finance and Robertson Chair of Insurance. “Many of our attendees run their own insurance businesses, and I hope that they get a good overview of national and regional developments affecting the risk management and insurance business that will help them better position their businesses in this challenging economy.”

Speakers include Jay Fishman, chairman and CEO of the Travelers Cos.; Parker Rush, president and CEO of the Republic Group; Wade Reece, chairman and CEO of BB&T Insurance Services; Neal Abernathy, president and CEO of Swett & Crawford; and Bob Rusbuldt, president and CEO of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America.

Other speakers are Gov. Haley Barbour; Mike Chaney, commissioner of insurance; Tom Fenter, chief medical officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield; Sabrena Sally, senior vice president of Swiss Re Commercial Insurance; and Robert Sutter, president of Keystone Legacy Development.

The symposium usually attracts more than 200 attendees, many of whom are professionals from Mississippi and Tennessee, said Camille Mitchell, RMI project coordinator for the business school.

Registration is $135, which includes the opportunity to earn up to nine continuing education units for Mississippi and Tennessee insurance licensees. It also covers an opening reception sponsored by Webb, Sanders & Williams PLLC. UM business students can attend most of the educational sessions free of charge.

“I didn’t think we could top last year’s speaker lineup, but we may have done it with five CEOs, each from different segments of the business, plus Gov. (Haley) Barbour on the main program,” Cox said. “I believe that we have the strongest overall lineup ever.”
