Sculptures by New York-born Artist Displayed in Meek Hall Through Jan. 17

OXFORD, Miss. – Sculptures by visiting artist Jennifer
Torres are on exhibit at the University of Mississippi
through Jan. 17.

Torres, a faculty member at the University of Southern
Mississippi, is showing her work in Gallery 130 of Meek
Hall. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The
gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays except during the
holiday break Dec. 21-Jan. 2.

Born in Queens, N.Y., Torres completed her first four years
of studio training as a teenager at the Art Students
League, followed by undergraduate work at the Cooper Union,
both in New York.

While at Cooper Union, she took a year off to travel alone
in India and Nepal, a trip she says was a turning point in
her life and a great influence in her later work. After
graduating from Cooper Union, she trained as a fine
cabinetmaker in New England, then worked at a lumber mill
in Oregon.

Torres earned her master’s of fine arts from the University
of Georgia in 1995 and has served as chair of the art
departments at both USM and Bethany College in Lindsborg,
Kan.

“She has been around and done a lot of different things,”
said Nancy Wicker, UM art department chair. “She has a
varied background and that’s great for our students.
Artists need to be exposed to different perspectives and
ways of making art.”
