Students Display Artwork from Study Abroad Program in London

OXFORD, Miss – Going to London is a dream for many people, but for Study Abroad art students and faculty at the University of Mississippi, it was a dream come true.

On Friday (October 24), four students are to display their work in an exhibit called “Watercolor in London.” Included are photos and memoirs of their experiences. The exhibition begins at 5:30 p.m. at Marimekko, 403 South Lamar Blvd. just south of the Square, and is open to the public.

“Watercolor in London was a wonderful course and the city itself was vibrant and rich with history and culture,” said Danita Beck, a graduate art major from Memphis. Beck was one of the four UM students who participated in the program during the two-week August intercession.
“We are doing more than hanging art and selling it,” Beck said. “We are sharing a group experience through paintings, photographs, stories and music.”

“It was a very exciting experience for the students,” said Paula Temple, UM professor of art. “We explored the city of London and all it has to offer.”

Study Abroad programs are a chance for students to travel and earn course credit. Study Abroad offers many different courses to places all over the world from Africa to China. This was the third such course for Temple, and she hopes to have a “Watercolor in Barbados” course in June 2009.

The exhibit is to run for about four weeks. For more information concerning “Watercolor in London” or for assistance related to a disability, contact the Department of Art at 662-915-7193.
