To ensure appropriate supervision of minors who are on campus or involved in university-sponsored programs, the University of Mississippi adopted a new mandatory Supervision of Minors policy that went into effect on April 22, 2013.
“We enjoy one of the most beautiful, inviting and safe campuses in the country,” said Lee Tyner, university attorney and special assistant to the chancellor. “This policy helps promote all the values that make our community such a welcoming and safe place.”
The policy, which applies to all members of the university community and visitors, includes:
- Do not have One-On-One contact with a Minor on campus or during university-related Programs on or off campus.
- If you suspect a minor has been abused or neglected, state law requires that you call the Mississippi Department of Human Services (1-800-222-8000) and University Police Department (662-915-7234) immediately.
- See Something, Say Something: It’s your duty to report to the Title IX coordinator anything that gives rise to concern for the health or safety of a minor. The UM Title IX coordinator can be reached at 662-915-7045.
- All Program activities involving minors must be supervised by at least two or more Authorized Adults who have passed a background check and undergone mandatory Supervision of Minors training.
- For additional information after reviewing the full policy, contact Joseph Lawhorne at 662-915-7045.
