OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi’s annual Memorial Day, which honors students, faculty, staff and friends of the university who have died in the previous year, is set for May 3.
The ceremony is set for 4:30 p.m. in Paris-Yates Chapel. The event is open to everyone, and friends and family members of those being remembered are especially invited to attend.
“The university places great value on community and family,” said Sparky Reardon, dean of students. “Memorial Day is our opportunity to remember those who have passed away but have been an important part of our university family.”
This year’s ceremony will honor four students, 11 faculty and two staff members, and six special friends of the university who died during the 2011-12 school year.
Reardon said that the ceremony is a moving one.
“I think that the most poignant part of the ceremony is having the chance to have all of the families and friends back on the campus to remember those who have been an important part of our lives,” he said.
A public reception follows the ceremony.
