OXFORD, Miss. – Pianist Washington Garcia is set to perform as a special guest artist March 9 at the University of Mississippi.
The show is slated for 8 p.m. in Nutt Auditorium, and tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for UM students with valid IDs. They can be purchased at the UM Box Office in the Ole Miss Student Union, telephone 662-915-7411 or at the auditorium box office on the night of the performance.
Garcia is the recipient of numerous artistic awards, including the Continental Airlines Sponsorship, the Presser Music Award and the Friends of Fine Arts Scholarly/Creative Award.
Ian Hominick, UM associate professor of music, describes Garcia as a “very passionate pianist.”
“He always gives 100 percent and his varied program promises to include something for everyone’s tastes,” Hominick said.
Garcia began studying and performing music when he was 6 and soon began playing at Ecuador’s cultural centers. He continued his studies and earned a bachelor’s degree at Ecuador’s National Conservatory of Music and master’s and doctoral degrees at Johns Hopkins University. At 25, he was the youngest Latin American to receive a doctoral degree in piano performance from Johns Hopkins.
In his recital, Garcia plans to perform works by Bach, Haydn, Gershwin, Chopin and Ginastera.
