Women’s Glee Choir Chosen to Perform March 8 at Regional Conference

OXFORD, Miss. – The Women’s Glee choral group at the
University of Mississippi has been chosen to perform at the
Southern Division Convention of the American Choral
Directors Association in Louisville, Ky., which kicks off
Wednesday (March 5).

The choir is slated to present a 25-minute program on the
final day of the convention, at 10 a.m. Saturday (March 8)
at the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville.

The 45-member ensemble was chosen based on recordings
submitted from over the past three years, said Debra
Spurgeon, choir director.

“In the choral world, participating in an ACDA convention
is one of the highest honors; it’s something all choral
ensembles aspire to do,” said Spurgeon, associate professor
of music. “It has educational value for the students,
because they can learn a lot and grow from the experience.”

The group performs music of the highest caliber
representing all stylistic periods and genres. Membership
in the choir is by audition and approximately half of the
members are music majors with the other half coming from
various other academic majors.

In 2006, the Women’s Glee performed by invitation during
the Mississippi Music Educators convention in Jackson. Last
year, another Ole Miss choral group, the Concert Singers,
was invited to perform during the ACDA’s national
convention in Miami.
