Prescott received the award for her project \u201cBotanical Aphrodisiacs for Women\u2019s Health.\u201d She was awarded one annual $4,500 grant that will allow her to continue her research on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile at the University of Mississippi, I have been focused on botanical aphrodisiacs and their applications in women&#8217;s health, specifically in female sexual dysfunctions,\u201d said Prescott, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences. \u201cI have always been interested in the &#8216;why and how&#8217; behind herbal medicine \u2013 why these plants have been used for all of this time and how they work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prescott credited her adviser, Ikhlas Khan, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.olemiss.edu\/ncnpr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Center for Natural Products Research<\/a> and distinguished professor of pharmacognosy, for encouraging her to find research projects that inspire her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Khan is an atypical adviser in that he let me have the freedom to pursue a project I was interested in and passionate about, and I am very appreciative of that,\u201d Prescott said. \u201cHe has always led from a place of wanting us students to be independent in order to benefit our future careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khan praised Prescott\u2019s ambition and creativity as both a researcher and student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHayley has always been a free thinker and not afraid of handling challenging tasks, and her topic of research depicts that,\u201d Khan said. \u201cShe is fun to work with, and I\u2019ve been happy to have her as a group member.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prescott also cited Nicole Ashpole, UM assistant professor of pharmacology, as an important mentor and example to follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of me wants to say that having a strong female mentor is extremely important in my development as a young scientist, but she is so much more than that limiting label,\u201d Prescott said. \u201cDr. Ashpole is by far one of the best and hardest-working mentors, leaders and scientists that we have here at the University of Mississippi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prescott plans to put her education in action, as she has an interest in policy work around dietary supplements or being hands-on through community work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started off very doe-eyed, wanting to change the world with my research and my degree,\u201d Prescott said. \u201cBut the starting and end goal has really been the same, and that is my desire to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Hayley Prescott, a graduate student in the Department of BioMolecular Sciences at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, has been named a recipient of the Anne S.
