OXFORD,
\nMiss. – Saskia Sassen, one of the world’s leading authorities on
\nglobalization and urban life, plans to discuss “Re-Assembling
\nTerritory, Authority and Rights in Today’s Global South” Feb. 19 at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

The free, public event is set for 5
\np.m. in the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics
\nAuditorium, with a reception to follow.<\/p>\n

Sassen is an American
\nsociologist and economist noted for her analyses of globalization, the
\nglobal city and international human migration. She is the Robert S.
\nLynd Professor of Sociology and member of the Committee on Global
\nThought at Columbia University in New York.<\/p>\n


“We are very excited to have Dr. Sassen visit our campus,” said event coordinator Jeff Jackson, associate professor of sociology. “Her scholarship on the broader dynamics of globalization and how they influence our lives is fascinating. I think anyone who has an interest in these matters will want to hear what Dr. Sassen has to say.”<\/p>\n

Jackson is a member of UM’s Faculty Working Group on the Global South, sponsor of the event.<\/p>\n

Presented under the auspices of the Global South Speakers Lecture Series, Sassen’s visit to campus is also supported by the UM Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, College of Liberal Arts, Croft Institute for International Studies, Trent Lott Leadership Institute, William Winter Center for Racial Reconciliation, and the departments of African-American studies, English, gender studies, history, journalism, modern languages, philosophy and religion, political science, sociology and anthropology, and Southern studies.<\/p>\n

Sassen’s work examines how the nation-state is being transformed by global forces. Her latest books are “Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages” (Princeton University Press, 2008) and “A Sociology of Globalization” (Norton, 2007). She has completed for UNESCO a five-year project on sustainable human settlements based on a network of researchers and activists in more than 30 countries. This work is published as one of the volumes of the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (Oxford, UK: EOLSS Publishers). Sassen’s books have been translated into 19 languages, and she has written articles for The Guardian, The New York Times, Newsweek International, Financial Times and Huffingtonpost.com, among others.<\/p>\n

Besides her appointment at Columbia, Sassen is centennial visiting professor at the London School of Economics.<\/p>\n
