Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 A team of <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a> faculty members has received a prestigious $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nihsepa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Education Partnership Award program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first SEPA grant awarded to the university. It brings together faculty from across the university to participate in Project SCORE, which stands for Student Centered Outcomes Research Experience.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of Project SCORE is to excite Mississippi&#8217;s high school and university students about the health sciences. Students will participate in a yearlong weekly afterschool program aimed at increasing their interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health science careers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106467\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/faculty-receive-first-science-education-partnership-award\/marie-barnard-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-106467\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106467\" class=\"wp-image-106467\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-4-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-4-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-4.jpg 623w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-106467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marie Barnard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Participants in the project will be guided by Ole Miss faculty but will take a leading role in developing research projects that focus on health issues that directly affect them. This approach, known as youth participatory action research, or YPAR, has previously shown success in engaging the attention of young people, said <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.olemiss.edu\/blog\/team\/marie-barnard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marie Barnard<\/a>, associate professor of pharmacy administration in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Pharmacy<\/a>, who leads the project as principal investigator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re utilizing a YPAR approach to both bring the perspective of young adults to guide health research, but also to have them lead research projects,&#8221; Barnard said. &#8220;In this way the participants get to partner with experts to learn how to conduct research projects that can answer the questions that matter to them and hopefully inspire them to be interested in careers in the health sciences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joining Barnard as co-investigators are <a href=\"https:\/\/sas.olemiss.edu\/people\/allison-ford-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allison Ford-Wade<\/a>, professor of health, exercise science and recreation management in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sas.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Applied Sciences<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/people\/mgodfrey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Murrell Godfrey<\/a>, assistant dean of diversity, equity and inclusion in the <a href=\"https:\/\/umississippigradschool.university-tour.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106466\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/faculty-receive-first-science-education-partnership-award\/allison-ford-wade-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-106466\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106466\" class=\"wp-image-106466\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-3-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-3-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-3-768x1258.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-3-938x1536.jpg 938w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-3-640x1049.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UCIMG-1881-3.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-106466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Allison Ford-Wade<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.edu\/FacultyProfile\/Compretta_Caroline_E\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caroline Compretta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/umc.edu\/FacultyProfile\/Dehon_Erin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erin Dehon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.edu\/som\/Departments%20and%20Offices\/SOM%20Departments\/Pharmacology%20and%20Toxicology\/Faculty\/Robin-Rockhold.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Rockhold<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UM Medical Center<\/a> also serve as co-investigators, and faculty from both the Oxford and Medical Center campuses will participate.<\/p>\n<p>Two community organizations, the Boys &amp; Girls Club in Oxford and Stewpot Community Services in Jackson, are integral partners.
