OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Family and friends of the late Tommy Tosh in Oxford and throughout the country recently marked the 20th anniversary of<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>the young man’s untimely death.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tosh, a University of Mississippi<\/a> senior and<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>dedicated<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Rebel fan, died Sept. 29, 2001, from injuries sustained<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>in a car wreck near Nashville, Tennessee. He and<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>friends were involved in what was determined to be<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>an unavoidable accident as they drove to Lexington, Kentucky, for an Ole Miss-Kentucky football game.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

An Oxford native, the 21-year-old Tosh<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>touched the lives of hundreds of<\/span><\/span> community members <\/span><\/span>and Ole Miss alumni and continues to have a positive impact.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through the generosity of family and friends,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Tosh’s joyous spirit lives on through the Tommy Tosh Memorial Scholarship<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>at Ole Miss. As a way to celebrate his life, honor his memory, promote his supportive attitude toward others and cherish his kind nature, the scholarship was established in 2004.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years, the<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>endowment has<\/span><\/span> grown<\/span><\/span>, providing more<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>assistance to more students. It offers $5,000 a year for four years to four students at any given time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The scholarship’s goal remains the same: to assist Oxford High School graduates who are passionate about the community and Ole Miss.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kyle Gordon, of Oxford, was<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>only<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>7 months old when<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Tosh<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>died.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Yet today, this<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Tommy Tosh Scholar and sophomore<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>in the UM School of Applied Sciences<\/a><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>is learning the skills he needs to help others who have speech, language or hearing disabilities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I want<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>to thank<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>the late Mr. Tosh,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>his family, friends and supporters<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>who created this scholarship,” Gordon said. “I hope they<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>know how much I appreciate all they have done to provide me and so many others with the opportunity to obtain an education and provide us with a path to a rewarding career.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Sloan Thompson, one of Tosh’s Oxford classmates and friends, spoke to the person he was.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Tommy had the best smile,” she said. “He just lit up the room and instantly made you feel good. You wanted to be where he was because he was so very genuine. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“He would be so humbled to<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>know that so many people who loved him came together to establish a scholarship in his name that provides a way to assist Ole Miss students like Kyle<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>achieve their academic and professional dreams.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After his death,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>friends established the Tommy<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Tosh Golf<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Classic<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>to raise money<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>in his memory because golf was Tosh’s favorite sport.<\/span><\/span> Though the tournament has been discontinued, the scholarship endowment continues to grow with gifts from friends and Tommy’s family,<\/span> <\/span>including his parents, retired UM real estate professor Dennis Tosh and his wife, Beth, and their children, Christine Tosh Rayburn and Denny Tosh, all of Oxford.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ben Peeler,<\/span> a Tosh Scholar and UM business student, has his eyes on a career as a lawyer.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m enormously grateful for the Tommy Tosh Memorial Scholarship and those who provided me with this academic opportunity,” Peeler said. “What is equally important, if not more so, is that the members of the Tosh family are the kindest people I’ve ever met.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“This scholarship is one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had, and nothing makes my day like being able to talk with the Tosh family and know I have their support and encouragement.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Rayburn<\/span><\/span> said her brother is greatly missed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“We are forever grateful for Tommy’s smile, his humor and his deep love for his God, family and friends,” she said. “Even after 20 years, the very best of Tommy can still be seen and felt through those who knew him. Our family continues to be blessed by acts of kindness and sweet remembrances from those who loved Tommy so well.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
