Photo courtesy Fermilab<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The ongoing findings of a groundbreaking experiment involving subatomic particles is the topic for a virtual Oxford Science Cafe scheduled for Oct. 19 by a <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a> faculty member who is part of the research team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">The Virtual Oxford Science Cafe program will be hosted on Zoom beginning at 6 p.m. Breese Quinn, professor of physics and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/umcma.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Multi-messenger Astrophysics<\/a> at UM, will discuss &#8220;Subatomic Spinning Tops: The Muon g-2 experiment finds strong evidence for new physics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_107785\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/subatomic-particles-topic-for-virtual-oxford-science-cafe\/breese-quinn-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-107785\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107785\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-107785\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/UCIMG-1973-2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/UCIMG-1973-2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/UCIMG-1973-2.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-107785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Breese Quinn<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;Almost 20 years ago, an experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory measured how much muons wobble as they spin in a magnetic field,&#8221; Quinn said. &#8220;Their result disagreed with our best theory predictions and represents one of the strongest hints of new physics that we have had in decades.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">However, the measurement was not precise enough for the Brookhaven team to claim definitively that the evidence amounted to a new discovery.
