{"id":109655,"date":"2022-02-14T11:00:51","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T17:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=109655"},"modified":"2022-02-14T11:00:26","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T17:00:26","slug":"um-legends-to-reflect-for-black-history-month-keynote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-legends-to-reflect-for-black-history-month-keynote\/","title":{"rendered":"UM Legends to Reflect for Black History Month Keynote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Two <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a> icons are reflecting on what it means to be Black at the university, and how that has changed over time as part of this year&#8217;s Black History Month celebration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">The 2022 Black History Month keynote, &#8220;I Am UM,&#8221; is scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 16) and will feature Donald Cole and Peggie Gillom-Granderson in conversation about their time at the university \u2013 their struggles, victories and perspectives for the next generation of students. The event is set for 6 p.m. in the ballroom of the <a href=\"https:\/\/union.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109659\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-legends-to-reflect-for-black-history-month-keynote\/don-cole-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-109659\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109659\" class=\"wp-image-109659\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-1-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-1-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-1-768x1257.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-1-938x1536.jpg 938w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-1-640x1048.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-1.jpg 1251w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-109659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don Cole<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re two individuals who share different, and yet similar, experiences \u2013 both at the University of Mississippi,&#8221; said Cole, a former student activist who returned to Ole Miss as a caring mentor and administrator for decades. &#8220;It&#8217;s very important, I think not only because of the timing in terms of Black History Month, but the timing of it in terms of where we are as a nation and where we are as individuals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s turned out from where we&#8217;re both sitting that we have some perspectives that are going to be beneficial to all the voices that are going to be a part of this conversation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">Cole was a student at the university until being jailed and expelled in 1970 for protesting the treatment of Black students on campus. He later returned as a mathematics professor and became an administrator in the 1990s before retiring as assistant provost in 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">Gillom-Granderson is the Ole Miss women&#8217;s basketball team&#8217;s all-time scoring and rebounding leader, with 2,486 points and 1,271 rebounds. As an assistant coach, she was a part of 14 NCAA tournament appearances, including four trips to the Elite Eight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">She was also assistant coach on the United States&#8217; 2000 Olympic gold medal-winning team. She serves as the women&#8217;s director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at UM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">The two are also UM building namesakes. Gillom-Granderson is the first Black person to have a university building named in her honor, the Gillom Athletics Performance Center, and Cole, the second, with the Martindale-Cole Student Services Center.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109660\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-legends-to-reflect-for-black-history-month-keynote\/peggie-gillom-granderson-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-109660\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109660\" class=\"wp-image-109660\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-2-768x1258.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-2-938x1536.jpg 938w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-2-640x1049.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/UCIMG-2109-2.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-109660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peggie Gillom-Granderson<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">Cole said he is excited to share the stage with Gillom-Granderson because he has been a fan of hers since she first stepped on the court wearing red and blue, but also because he&#8217;s grown close to her and her family over the years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen her hurt and I&#8217;ve seen her in pain physically and mentally, and I&#8217;ve seen her endure through it and be an integral part of this institution,&#8221; Cole said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve even played ball against her \u2013 and we have different perspectives about that too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;Her story is that she won, and my story is that I won.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">Cole and Gillom-Granderson were asked to participate because of their unique perspectives and close ties to the university, but also because of their proximity in time and place to today&#8217;s student body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;Picking folks who have made history here and being able to discuss the context and richness of their impact here is something I&#8217;m excited to share with the campus,&#8221; said EJ Edney, assistant vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion. &#8220;I think we can be tempted to reflect on our far-gone past and we associate magnitude of impact with distance in time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">&#8220;But we have giants among us, living and breathing history.
