{"id":11131,"date":"2011-11-01T11:41:58","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T16:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zing.olemiss.edu\/?p=11131"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:33:34","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:33:34","slug":"book-nominations-now-accepted-for-2012-um-common-reading-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/book-nominations-now-accepted-for-2012-um-common-reading-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Nominations Accepted For 2012 UM Common Reading Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zing.olemiss.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/CommonReading-300px.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9312\" style=\"margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px;\" title=\"Common Reading Experience Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/zing.olemiss.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/CommonReading-300px.jpg\" alt=\"Common Reading Experience Logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Faculty, staff and students are now able to suggest a book for the 2012 UM Common Reading Experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purposes of the Common Reading Experience support the goals of our university: building community around academic inquiry, introducing students to the ways in which different disciplines approach problems, broadening perspectives, and increasing awareness of the unresolved conflicts and history that make up our culture,\u201d said Robert Cummings, director of the Center for Writing and Rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second year that the university will participate in a campus-wide reading program. The first Common Reading Experience was very successful. The campus read \u201cThe Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks\u201d by award-winning author Rebecca Skloot, who spoke on campus at Freshman Convocation in August.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had widespread participation and support of the Common Reading selection and related events,\u201d said Leslie Banahan, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs. \u201cFaculty, staff and students have engaged in wonderful discussions about the many themes of \u2018The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.\u2019 Related events have been well attended, and there are still events to come. For our first effort, I think we\u2019ve done very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To submit a nomination, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/umreads.olemiss.edu\/suggest-a-book\/\">http:\/\/umreads.olemiss.edu\/suggest-a-book\/<\/a>. A desirable book is one that is in paperback and less than 400 pages.
