The first award was given in 2001 to philanthropist and education champion Jim Barksdale and his late wife<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\"> Sally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">McDonnell <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">Barksdale. In 2003, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">the late former governor of Mississippi<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\"> William Winter and his late wife<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\"> Elise Winter<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">, received the award<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">. In 2013, the university honored <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">Myrlie<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\"> Evers-Williams, wife of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">slain <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">civil rights icon Medgar Evers. The most recent <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">recipient was<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18883323 BCX0\">late U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran in 2018.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW18883323 BCX0\" SCXW190815401 BCX0\">Meredith empowered the advancement of society, compelled others to acknowledge the equality of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190815401 BCX0\">all individuals <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190815401 BCX0\">and inspired others to stand up to inequality<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190815401 BCX0\">, Boyce said. Integrating the university<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">was a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">marker <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">hat<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\"> bolster<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">ed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\"> integration efforts across the state<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">said Donald Cole, retired UM assistant provost and assistant to the chancellor for multicultural affairs<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259637510 BCX0\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW259637510 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">\u201cSixty years ago, our university was in turmoil,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">Cole <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">said<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\"> Wednesday night.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">\u201cW<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">e were a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">losed society. One that perpetuated among <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\">itself views<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5780850 BCX0\"> that were flawed. Following graduation, Meredith continued <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW44540187 BCX0\">to study<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW44540187 BCX0\"> political science at University of Ibadan in Nigeria before earning a law degree<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW44540187 BCX0\"> at Columbia University.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW44540187 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\">In 1966, Meredith began the \u201cMarch Against Fear,\u201d a walk from Memphis, Tennessee<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\"> to Jackson, Mississippi. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\">The march, intended to highlight racial inequality in Mississippi, came to a quick and violent halt <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\">when Meredith was shot and injured<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\"> on the second day<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18211294 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW18211294 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">Leaders of major <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">ivil <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">r<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">ights orga<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">nizations <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW190311024 BCX0\">took up the cause and vowed to complete the march in Meredith\u2019s stead.
