{"id":1140,"date":"2009-03-17T15:48:04","date_gmt":"2009-03-17T20:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=1140"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:41:11","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:41:11","slug":"lawwater031709","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/lawwater031709\/","title":{"rendered":"Water Quantity is Focus of Law Symposium March 24-25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Programming geared for practicing lawyers, water managers, law students<\/p>\n<p>OXFORD,<br \/>\nMiss. &#8211; Ongoing problems and emerging solutions related to water<br \/>\nquantity is the theme of the National Sea Grant Law Center Symposium<br \/>\nMarch 24-25 at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>Held at the Ole<br \/>\nMiss-Oxford Depot and hosted by the Sea Grant Law Center at UM, the<br \/>\nsymposium aims to provide information on water scarcity, an<br \/>\nenvironmental issue that has not gained widespread attention in<br \/>\nMississippi, said Stephanie Showalter, NSGLC director.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We<br \/>\ndecided to focus on water quantity this year because there is ongoing<br \/>\nlitigation between the state of Mississippi and the city of Memphis<br \/>\nwith respect to withdraws from the Memphis Sands Aquifer,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n&#8220;The symposium will open with a keynote address by one of the attorneys<br \/>\ninvolved in this litigation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>Showalter said the symposium is geared toward practicing lawyers and law students, as well as anyone involved with water quantity study or planning.<\/p>\n<p>Programming on Wednesday features experts from around the country who plan to discuss how their states and regions have dealt with similar issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it will be a valuable opportunity for Mississippi attorneys and water managers to learn about the legal regime governing water use and how other states are addressing scarcity,&#8221; Showalter said.<\/p>\n<p>Presenters include David Naftzger, executive director of the Council of Great Lakes Governors; Martin Jaffe of the University of Illinois at Chicago; Mark Masters of the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center; Mark Davis of the Tulane Institute on Water Resources Law and Policy; Laurence Stockton of the King County Department of Resources and Parks; and Brian Weeks of the New Jersey Department of Public Advocate.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium begins Tuesday evening with a dinner at the Inn at Ole Miss, including the keynote address. Wednesday programming begins at 7:30 a.m. with registration at the Ole Miss-Oxford Depot.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of the conference is $35 and includes registration fee, materials, Tuesday dinner and Wednesday lunch.
