Programming geared for practicing lawyers, water managers, law students<\/p>\n
OXFORD,
\nMiss. – Ongoing problems and emerging solutions related to water
\nquantity is the theme of the National Sea Grant Law Center Symposium
\nMarch 24-25 at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n
Held at the Ole
\nMiss-Oxford Depot and hosted by the Sea Grant Law Center at UM, the
\nsymposium aims to provide information on water scarcity, an
\nenvironmental issue that has not gained widespread attention in
\nMississippi, said Stephanie Showalter, NSGLC director.<\/p>\n
“We
\ndecided to focus on water quantity this year because there is ongoing
\nlitigation between the state of Mississippi and the city of Memphis
\nwith respect to withdraws from the Memphis Sands Aquifer,” she said.
\n“The symposium will open with a keynote address by one of the attorneys
\ninvolved in this litigation.”<\/p>\n
Showalter said the symposium is geared toward practicing lawyers and law students, as well as anyone involved with water quantity study or planning.<\/p>\n
Programming on Wednesday features experts from around the country who plan to discuss how their states and regions have dealt with similar issues.<\/p>\n
“I think it will be a valuable opportunity for Mississippi attorneys and water managers to learn about the legal regime governing water use and how other states are addressing scarcity,” Showalter said.<\/p>\n
Presenters include David Naftzger, executive director of the Council of Great Lakes Governors; Martin Jaffe of the University of Illinois at Chicago; Mark Masters of the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center; Mark Davis of the Tulane Institute on Water Resources Law and Policy; Laurence Stockton of the King County Department of Resources and Parks; and Brian Weeks of the New Jersey Department of Public Advocate.<\/p>\n
The symposium begins Tuesday evening with a dinner at the Inn at Ole Miss, including the keynote address. Wednesday programming begins at 7:30 a.m. with registration at the Ole Miss-Oxford Depot.<\/p>\n
The cost of the conference is $35 and includes registration fee, materials, Tuesday dinner and Wednesday lunch. To register, call 662-915-7775. Walk-ins will be accepted on a space-available basis. The Mississippi Commission on Continuing Legal Education has approved this course for 5.25 hours of credit.<\/p>\n
