Photo by Robert Jordan\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Several <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Mississippi<\/a> graduate students in <a href=\"https:\/\/masterimc.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">integrated marketing communications<\/a> are getting firsthand experience in the design and orchestration of the sixth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/conversation.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">National Week of Conversation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, through partnering with Listen First Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to close the gap in a polarized American society through civic discussion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whether it&#8217;s uncomfortable conversations around the dinner table or vitriolic debates on the national stage, toxic polarization has climbed in recent years in the United States, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2019\/10\/10\/partisan-antipathy-more-intense-more-personal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">data from the Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_115239\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/imc-graduate-students-partner-with-nonprofit-to-create-national-change\/skb_4136-aq-jpg\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115239\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115239\" class=\"wp-image-115239\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-2-768x1258.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-2-938x1536.jpg 938w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-2-640x1049.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-2.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graham Bodie<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The National Week of Conversation, April 17-23, will offer multiple opportunities to participate in digital discussions and events, including a screening of &#8220;The Abortion Talks&#8221; at 5 p.m. April 17 at the Jackson Avenue Center and a free, online public dialogue hosted by Essential Partners at 2:30 p.m.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span>April 20.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Graduate students taking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> IMC 559<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: Advanced IMC Campaigns, taught by professor Graham Bodie, are creating the web design, marketing, video and overall structure for the week of events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;I&#8217;m teaching them to build a plane while they fly it,&#8221; said Bodie, who has been working with Listen First Project since 2017. &#8220;This is what that looks like in real time. These are the ins and outs of collective collaborations.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beginning last fall, the 16 students met weekly with representatives of Listen First Project and affiliated nonprofits to talk about the divide in America and how the National Week of Conversation can begin to bring those groups together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;What we know about change is it is not top-down,&#8221; Bodie said. &#8220;We are illustrating the power of local efforts to create a national change.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The class has delved into collective impact \u2013 the utility of nonprofit groups bringing different skill sets to complex problems \u2013 and toxic polarization, said Kaylee Crafton, a second-year IMC graduate student from Kennett, Missouri, who is leading the team&#8217;s marketing efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Our nation feels very divided,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We&#8217;re seeing more of the strongest viewpoints on one side and the strongest viewpoints on the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It&#8217;s creating this toxicity in the sense that we can&#8217;t even talk to each other, and we&#8217;re having these hateful, strong feelings against people we may not even know just because they associate with red or blue.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_115240\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/imc-graduate-students-partner-with-nonprofit-to-create-national-change\/pearce-godwin\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115240\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115240\" class=\"wp-image-115240\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-3-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-3-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/UCIMG-2597-3.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pearce Godwin<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bridging, the term often used in Bodie&#8217;s discussion to indicate the connecting of disparate people groups, is not about changing viewpoints, Crafton said. It is about understanding one another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">Crafton said she believes the kind of bridging taught and encouraged during NWoC is an answer to the divide in America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout the class, nonprofit leaders talked about what the 2023 event should look like and how to best provide space for bridging to happen in real time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;We wouldn&#8217;t be having this conversation if we didn&#8217;t think working together works,&#8221; said Pearce Godwin, CEO of Listen First Project. &#8220;This is our breakout year, and we have such an opportunity here.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In early November, Godwin challenged the students to submit their &#8220;boldest and hairiest&#8221; ideas for the spring event during a meeting that also included representatives of more than a dozen affiliated nonprofit organizations to brainstorm ideas for 2023 NWoC events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;This is why we have this team of graduate students \u2013 to bring those ideas to life,&#8221; Godwin said.<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Several University of Mississippi graduate students in integrated marketing communications are getting firsthand experience in the design and orchestration of the sixth annual National Week of Conversation, through partnering with Listen First Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to close the gap in a polarized American society through civic discussion.
