\nMiss. – The University of Mississippi celebrates the life and legacy of
\nRoy Lee “Chucky” Mullins each year with the presentation of the Chucky
\nMullins Courage Award to a rising senior defensive player on the Ole
\nMiss football team.<\/p>\n
For the 20th anniversary of the honor,
\nmembers of the UM and Oxford communities are invited to share their
\nthoughts and stories about Mullins on camera for a video presentation
\nthat will be featured during the April 16 awards banquet. The segments
\nwill be taped anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday
\n(April 1-2) in Kinard Hall, Room 236 (Wing D). No appointment is needed.<\/p>\n
“If you knew Chucky Mullins in any way, please come share your story with us,” said Micah Ginn, producer-director at the UM Center for Media and Documentary Projects. “We want this year’s celebration to further illuminate the impact Chucky had on our lives, and we can only do that through the stories of those that came in contact with this unique young man.”<\/p>\n
Mullins, playing defensive back, suffered a paralyzing injury Oct. 28, 1989, while making a tackle in the Ole Miss homecoming game against Vanderbilt. After extensive rehabilitation, he returned to school in a wheelchair in January 1991 but died that May as a result of complications from the injury.<\/p>\n
Phi Beta Sigma fraternity established the Chucky Mullins Courage Award in spring 1990 to honor him.<\/p>\n
In 2004, Ginn produced “Undefeated: The Chucky Mullins Story,” a documentary of Mullins’ life and impact on the university and Oxford communities.<\/p>\n
