OXFORD,
\nMiss. – Outstanding students from all disciplines and the top teacher
\non campus are to be recognized Thursday (April 2) at the University of
\nMississippi’s 66th annual Honors Day Convocation.<\/p>\n

The
\nconvocation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Ford Center for the Performing
\nArts. Selected students are to be presented with Marcus Elvis Taylor
\nMemorial Medals, the university’s highest academic award, and one
\nfaculty member is to receive the Elsie M. Hood Outstanding Teacher of
\nthe Year award.<\/p>\n

Guest speaker for the convocation is Gregory
\nAlan Schirmer, professor of English and the 2008 Hood Award recipient.
\nFollowing the ceremony, a reception is planned in the Ford Center’s
\norchestra level lobby.<\/p>\n

At separate events, new members are to be
\ninducted into the university’s top two student honor societies. The Phi
\nKappa Phi ceremony is scheduled Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Ford
\nCenter. Phi Beta Kappa holds its ceremony Friday (April 3) at 2 p.m. in
\nthe Paul B. Johnson Commons Ballroom.<\/p>\n

The Taylor Medals,
\nestablished in 1904, are the university’s highest academic honor and
\nrecognize no more than 1 percent of the student body each year. The
\nHood Award was first given in 1966 and allows faculty, staff, students
\nand alumni to nominate a deserving professor for superior classroom
\nteaching.<\/p>\n

Phi Kappa Phi recognizes outstanding scholarship in
\nall academic disciplines. Forty-three students will be inducted.
\nFifty-four students are slated for induction into Phi Beta Kappa, the
\nnation’s oldest and most prestigious liberal arts honor society.
\nChancellor Robert Khayat will speak at the Phi Beta Kappa ceremony.<\/p>\n
