Submitted photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 For the next two years, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Mississippi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> history instructor Beth Kruse will live and work in Vicksburg, delving into the untold story of Black Americans in the tumultuous Civil War South.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.org\/nps-mellon-humanities-postdoctoral-fellowship\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The National Park Service Mellon Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> has named 15 postdoctoral fellows \u2013 Kruse among them \u2013 to help tell a more inclusive and complete story of American history, particularly focusing on people who have, in the past, not been included in history\u2019s narrative.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As a fellow, Kruse will be piecing together the history and experiences of African Americans living in and around Vicksburg between the Civil War and Reconstruction.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis is an enormous accomplishment for Beth,\u201d said Kathryn McKee, director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/southernstudies.olemiss.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. \u201cBeth has gotten a post doc that potentially points her toward a career in public history. This is a testimony to her persistence and her hard work and the quality of her work.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For her fellowship, Kruse will examine widow and orphan pension letters and other documents from African American soldiers buried in the Vicksburg National Cemetery who died in the war. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The sources have already revealed the strength of community and family in forming Vicksburg Freedmen towns as well as the bonds formed between men who joined the U.S. Colored Troops and their families, Kruse said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">By tracing these documents, Kruse hopes to find missing links in the genealogy of some African Americans living in the region. During the fellowship, Kruse will be part of the Vicksburg National Park plan to host a genealogy class helping community members trace their family\u2019s back to the antebellum era.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe are strengthening partnerships with the Vicksburg African American community because many of them are descendants of the U.S. Colored Troops or Freedmen,\u201d Kruse said.&nbsp; \u201cIt is their stories that we want to insert back into the local Civil War and Reconstruction era history.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Telling the lesser-known stories about African American soldiers who fought and died in the war will also help close a gap in history, Kruse said.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI really want to give the life stories of those, especially the men who are buried in that cemetery,\u201d Kruse said. \u201cThose who have been written out of history, they\u2019re still fighting for the rights that were guaranteed for them after the Civil War that were denied through Reconstruction era violence and Jim Crow era laws.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThere&#8217;s still systemic racism and exclusion in America.
