OXFORD,
\nMiss. – An award-winning University of Mississippi author has scheduled
\na promotional appearance in support of her latest book.<\/p>\n

Ann
\nFisher-Wirth, professor of English, is slated to read from “Carta
\nMarina: A Poem in Three Parts” (Wings Press, 2009) Monday (April 6) at
\nOff Square Books in Oxford. She will autograph copies beginning at 5:30
\np.m., with the reading to follow. The event is free and open to the
\npublic.<\/p>\n

Winner of a Malahat Review Long Poem Prize, a Rita Dove
\nPoetry Award and a Poetry Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts
\nand Letters, Fisher-Worth already has received critical acclaim for the
\nbook.<\/p>\n


“Passionately and precisely, sensuously and learnedly, ‘Carta Marina’ maps the terrain of our earthly fidelities and losses,” wrote poet Jane Hirshfield. “These poems summon abundance.”<\/p>\n

“The first largely accurate map of the Northern Countries, completed by the Swedish historian Olaus Magnus in 1539, the map called ‘Carta Marina’ explodes with phantasmagoria,” Fisher-Wirth said. “Trolls, sea serpents, reindeer, lions, warriors, monsters all coexist in the map; and in the poem they become metaphors for the wilderness, the realm of dream and terror, that constantly haunts our constructions of order.<\/p>\n

\"carta-marina.jpg\"“‘Carta Marina’ is about the ways in which the heart can open, and, with great difficulty, negotiate various forms of love, creating a path that honors what is lost and what remains.”<\/p>\n

Fisher-Wirth received two Poetry Fellowships from the Mississippi Arts Commission, eight Pushcart nominations and a Pushcart Special Mention. She has held a Fulbright lectureship at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in American Studies at Uppsala University in Sweden.<\/p>\n

A graduate of Pomona College and Claremont Graduate School, Fisher-Wirth joined the UM faculty in 1988. She teaches creative writing, American literature and courses in literature and the environment.<\/p>\n
